Origins of Split

The city of Split was founded by the the Greek colonists who came from Vis island (Issa) in order to trade with Illyrians on today’s Split peninsula. That happened in the the 3rd century BC. Greeks named this emporion (trading post) Aspalathos. The town was named after a plant called Asphalatos, Spartium (today Spanish broom) since the Greeks saw a lot of those bushes in Split area.

Roman Period

Romans managed to conquer Illyricum (including today’s Split, Croatia) in a series of wars that lasted from 229 BC until 9 AD. Their government there lasted until 480 AD when the lat legal emperor of the Western Roman Emipire was killed in Diocletian’s Palace (today’s Croatian city of Split).

Split is mentioned as Spalatum on the 1st century AD Roman map called Tabula Peutingeriana.

Tabula Peutingeriana is a 1st century AD Roman map of the Roman Empire. Presence of Split on this map means that this city is older than Diocletian’s Palace.

Construction of Diocletian’s Palace

In 295 AD Roman Emperor Diocletian decided to build his retirement palace on Split peninsula. Construction works lasted until 305 AD when Diocletian retired and enetered his imperial palace.
